Washington [US], December 6: Yesterday, a team of world scientists published an annual analysis report on the Global Carbon Project, which warned that the world is at risk of exceeding the warming threshold of 1.5 degrees Celsius. with the pre-industrial era within the next 7 years.
If the 1.5 degree Celsius threshold is crossed, researchers fear humanity will be forced to witness a world with serious climate impacts for humans, wildlife and ecosystems.
The study found that fossil fuels accounted for 36.8 billion tons of the 40.9 billion tons of CO2 estimated to have been emitted into the air this year, a 1.1% increase over last year. The good news is that some of the world's major emitters have managed to reduce emissions this year, including the US by 3% and the European Union (EU) by 7.4%.
However, China, which accounts for nearly a third of global emissions, is expected to see CO 2 from fossil fuels increase by 4% in 2023. In addition, emissions in India is expected to increase by more than 8%, meaning it will surpass the EU to become the world's third largest fossil fuel emitter.
Veteran expert Glen Peters of the Center for International Climate and Environmental Research (Norway) points out a bleak reality: CO 2 emissions are currently 6% higher than when the countries signed the Agreement. Paris at COP21 in 2015.
"The situation is becoming increasingly urgent," author Pierre Friedlingstein of the University of Exeter (UK) told the press. He warned that the world must act immediately if it wants to maintain its chances of achieving the goal of limiting global temperature rise to below 1.5 degrees Celsius.
