New York [US], August 24: In her speech at the DNC, US Vice President Kamala Harris accepted the Democratic nomination to enter a two-horse race with Republican rival Donald Trump in November. With this move, Ms. Kamala Harris officially made her name in the history of the US presidential election as the first woman of color and Asian descent to receive the Democratic nomination in the sprint to the White House.
At the DNC, Ms. Harris spoke eloquently about the future and development of America. Accordingly, the Vice President declared that the upcoming election is "a precious opportunity to chart a new path" for the future of America. Candidate Harris pledged to become a president for all Americans, putting the country above party and upholding the most basic foundations of the nation. According to CNN, Ms. Harris also affirmed that America is not divided as described by Mr. Trump, and called on people to unite and unify.
With these strong statements, Ms. Harris not only demonstrated her efforts to define herself and the future of America, but also breathed new life into the Democratic Party after President Joe Biden withdrew. If she defeats Mr. Trump in the upcoming election, Ms. Harris will once again make history by becoming the first female president of the United States.
Policy shaping
In her historic DNC speech, Harris pledged strong support for both Ukraine and NATO allies. Regarding the tension in the Middle East, Vice President Harris pledged to protect Israel, bring hostages home and end the conflict in Gaza. However, Harris's statements could not appease Palestinian supporters as thousands of people still gathered outside the DNC venue to protest the US's support for Israel's military campaign in the Gaza Strip. According to CNN, this is one of the most divisive issues among the Democratic Party's supporters.
On economic policy, Ms. Harris criticized Mr. Trump for not fighting for the middle class, not having a plan to raise taxes on the wealthy, and supporting ending women's right to abortion. On that basis, Ms. Harris launched a series of policies that contrasted with Mr. Trump, such as cutting taxes for the middle class, fighting for abortion rights, increasing housing supply, and banning price gouging of essential goods.
On immigration, Harris noted that Democrats and Republicans in Congress have drafted a bipartisan bill to address the issue. She stressed her commitment to "bringing a bipartisan border security bill" and said she would sign it into law if elected president.
